When I Tried to Do Business with China
My Story
As you might know, I lived and worked in California most of my adult life (33 years). Our church, Bethel Baptist Church, which we planted in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1987, and I became a publisher, Pillar and Ground Publishing, to publish biblical and theological works. It is now a work for South Decatur Baptist Church. When we got ready to publish our book, A Pure Church, I looked into different ways to print the book. I used print-on-demand in the United States for our first book and then a United States printer for the second one.
Since the church was on the West Coast, it was easier to get connections with Asia. I did not believe that I would use China to print our book, but I wanted to see if I could do it. You can find Chinese printers online, inviting business from the United States, so I contacted a few of them. They all wanted our business, that is, until I told them the content of our book. It was illegal for a Chinese printer to do our book because of its biblical, Christian subject matter.
In other words, I could want to save money in China, but China would not do business with a church with a biblical presentation to make. None of the printers I contacted would print our book. Two of them, I believe forgetting what we were printing, contacted me again about our interest for using them. Again, I was 90 plus percent sure that I would not use a Chinese printer, but China wouldn’t do it for me anyway.
Doing Business in China
In recent days, the media reports the potential destruction of a lady’s business, who has her baby bibs manufactured in China. The Trump tariffs won’t allow her to make a profit. She has all her own money and even a sizeable loan involved in this business, and she will lose everything apparently. This is a risk she took in doing business with a foreign, Communist country like China.
How do people get cheaper prices dealing with China? Do you know? Some call it slave labor. The Chinese standard of living is very low compared to the United States. A huge part of this is the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its redistribution of wealth. Since a large percentage of business in China is state owned, United States business in China helps support the CCP. Because most of the Chinese people live in poverty, someone from the United States can do their job cheaper.
It is more expensive to do business in the Untied States, because of competition not found in a Communist government and country. People have freedom and choices, so for companies operating in the United States to get the better people, they have to pay them more. The United States might pride itself in the fairness of its workplaces, but one dirty little secret is that the United State has its main workforces in third world countries.
Don’t get me wrong. United States business helps the poor people in third world countries, who make stuff for Americans. They would be worse without the business they get from the United States. However, that model of business sends manufacturing (making things) over seas. What does China then do with this?
Intellectual Theft and More
The common report for China is that China operates according to its rules in trade and business. Chinese companies will steal the intellectual property of successful business in the United States and then sell it in the United States through Walmart, Amazon, and other outlets. A company starts and builds a venture through research and development, and when it reaches a certain threshold in sales, something like five million dollars, China does its own knock-off product and sells it a very reduced price with its poverty level workforce. It stole an idea without spending anything on research and development.
When China undercuts American business, either the company or its product line go out of business. It can’t compete with the price set by the Chinese company that is also subsidized in the Chinese economy. The Chinese take that business away from a United States company. A woman may lose her baby bib business because of tariffs, but once she succeeds to something like a five million dollar threshold, she can lose her business from the Chinese knock-off strategy. They steal her bib idea and sell it for cheap.
The United States has no authority in the courts of China to prosecute theft of intellectual property. When China steals things and American companies go under, this unfair practice does not equate to free trade. The Chinese can function in American courts to get their way here, but an American businessman doesn’t have the same recourse in China.
Conclusion
When I began to write this post, I asked the internet, which now is essentially an algorithm in artificial intelligence, about the Chinese Communist Party. I wanted to know how much of a cut the CCP made from its businesses. How big a cut did it take? Artificial intelligence almost always gives an answer, especially to that kind of question. I asked it in a number of different ways and it would not give me an answer. What do you think is happening? How free are we?
I want to go back to my original point. American printers are free to print biblical content. Chinese ones are not. China can censor religious material in violation of religious freedom. The United States has a first amendment, but when it does business with China like it does, it in fact undercuts and breaches its own Constitutional rights. It is a way of evading or bypassing human rights. People can talk a good talk about these issues, but skirt or sidestep in order to make a buck in China.
Answers for Both the Rise and the Threat of Suicide
Between 1999 and 2019, suicide rose 35.2% in the United States. Also according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Reports, in 2019:
- Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the U.S., claiming 47,500 lives.
- Suicide was the second leading cause of death for those age 10 to 34, and fourth for 35 to 44.
- Suicides (47,511) more than doubled homicides (19,141) in the U.S.
Apparently China has a much higher suicide rate, something like 22 out of 100,000 in China to 16 out of 100,000 in the U.S. The United States is climbing there. It was at 9 in 1999. China hired an evangelical pastor I know to provide a curriculum to prevent suicides. It didn’t have answers in its own worldview. China still won’t allow the Bible, but so helpless to stop the suicides in its young people, it permits a presentation that offers principles without the scripture references.
I talked to a believing Delta airline pilot. He faces great pressure to capitulate to woke philosophy with a threat of cancellation. Co-workers use the woke system to attempt to entrap the non-woke for firing. It reminded him of what occurred as an Air Force officer, when the leadership found itself facing multiplying suicides among officers and enlisted. The top men called bullying the cause and softness the remedy.
People hear more now with the internet, so they know more. They hear more about suicide and those threatening it. Statistics though show the percentages rising. This isn’t just greater information. It’s real. What is happening?
First, contentment and joy come from internal spiritual strength. God gives peace and satisfaction. Jesus said in John 14:27 and 16:33:
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
On the contrary, Isaiah wrote in 48:22 and 57:21:
There is no peace, saith the LORD, unto the wicked.
There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.
Likewise, he wrote in 59:8:
The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.
The things of the world and superficial pleasures will not fill inner longing. Only God will.
No one can put a bandaid over a spiritual problem and expect it to work. The world offers bandaids. A standing in God’s grace will ward off suicidal ideations. John describes this as overcoming the world. Satan and the world system tend toward death. God gives abundant life, which safeguards against this bad thinking.
With God as his highest value, a believer soaks in satisfaction. He does not look for or need the approval of social media. He finds pleasure in the will of God, not moved by worldly fads and popular notions.
Second, a death culture promulgates suicide. China is a death culture. The United States has become one. A death culture proceeds from at least two related causes. One, untethered from God it devalues His gift of life. The righteousness of God protects the right to live. Abortion manifests the divide from God. Two, taking life strikes at the image of God. A society that values God renders to Him the things that are His. A life is not man’s to take.
Third, the victim mentality justifies suicide. Eve was not a victim, but Satan got her thinking that way. This justified what she did. It brought forth death. God through Ezekiel denounces this mentality in Israel (Ezekiel 18:1-4, 25-32). The children said their teeth were set on edge because their fathers ate sour grapes.
A rudiment of wokeness is someone else made me a victim. Satan perpetuates this lie, because he wants people to kill themselves. His marks sink down into self-pity under false delusions. Instead of exposing this lie, other professing victims bolster it, reinforcing their victimhood. Among others, this lie feeds the popularity of the left in the United States. The left shrivels and disappears without victim mentality.
Short of suicide, people look for solace in drugs, alcohol, and worldly lust. Not everyone kills themselves, but they still live in a sad, dark existence, attempting to keep their head above water. Solomon said this world is vanity and vexation of spirit, so that the answer is not below the sun, but above it. Find peace in God, His truth and goodness.
I hope for less suicide and the threat of it. Under the temptation, God provides the way of escape. The answer is in Him. Everything else is a placebo for temporal inoculation, but it will not stop the spread of suicide.
Can Anyone Be Effeminate? Consider the Chinese
As I begin to write this post, it feels like something canceled on twitter, youtube, and facebook. No one must think this or this way. It must not be said or written. Perhaps a future reeducation camp in store for someone who crosses this boundary.
I was speaking this week to someone from China and the subject of effeminate Chinese men came up. This story made the news at the beginning of September 2021. You can find articles at major news outlets, such as ABC News and the Washington Post, reporting that as Xi Jinping, the general secretary of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP), starts a third term, the government cracks down on every sector of society with a “rectification” campaign. As part of pressure to align with the government’s vision of a powerful China and a healthier society, the CCP has banned effeminate men on television.
Apparently the trend or growth of effeminate men in Chinese society spread across the border of China through South Korea. South Korean and Japanese singers influenced Chinese pop stars toward unacceptable “niang po,” a Chinese insulting slang for effeminate men, which means “girlie guns.” The National Radio and TV Administration said that broadcasters must “resolutely put an end to sissy men and other abnormal esthetics.”
In a positive way, China’s government has ordered its broadcasters to encourage masculinity, a practice just the opposite of that of the United States. Its government says it wants to put a stop to abnormal beauty standards. The Washington Post article quotes Rana Mitter, an Oxford professor of modern Chinese and politics as saying:
The party does not feel comfortable with expressions of individualism that are in some ways transgressive to norms that it puts forward.
China does not see a future without two clearly delineated roles between men and women. Where does China get that idea? China wants effeminate women and masculine men.
Is there hope for any country that forsakes the God-ordained or natural roles of men and women? 1 Corinthians 11:14 and Romans 1:26-27 read:
Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature. And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
China sees something abnormal or a transgression of natural norms and stops it. The United States encourages it and prohibits discouragement. Listening to a podcast a few weeks ago, Jordan Peterson in an interview seemed to bemoan or mourn the illegality in Canada of conversion therapy. Not long ago society required masculinity and the fulfillment of the male role in society. Now it’s bullying to do so.
Churches now cooperate with the perversion of men, ignoring effeminate behavior. Imagine someone in a church telling a boy to stop acting like a girl. Churches now exalt soft-spoken, effeminate sounding and acting men, calling their mannerisms the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Today’s tone police cancels masculine tone. Churches need their own rectification campaigns.
Will men do anything? Will the ostensibly godly men of churches do anything?
If the Lord tarries and you live, prepare for world takeover by the Chinese, the country with the last men standing.
