My Daily Bible Reading: The KJV Bible Read Out Loud, Free

Do you listen to the Bible read out loud?  I have listened through the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible, read out loud, numbers of times.  (Alexander Scourby is my favorite.)  Someone whom we know, mainly as a matter for him to make sure that he is spending time in the Word each day, recorded himself reading the entire Bible aloud this last year on YouTube.  He described his YouTube channel’s purpose as:

 

The goal of this channel is to provide daily accountability to read through the whole Bible and more in one year from January 1 to December 31! God’s Word is a Lamp to our feet and a Light to our path. May this channel help us get strength, encouragement, rebuke, doctrine, and guidance each and every day!

I personally spend a certain number of minutes each week reading the Authorized, King James Version and the Hebrew Old Testament Textus Receptus, as well as reading a certain number of verses in the Greek Textus Receptus. I also work on studying through an Old Testament book (I am currently in Proverbs, reading it with Bruce Waltke’s valuable commentary on Proverbs; before that I read Psalms through with Spurgeon’s excellent Treasury of David) and Matthew, reading through the book with a rather brief dispensational Moody Bible commentary, the New International Greek Testament Commentary on Matthew (useful exegetical insights, but generally dry as dust and anti-verbal inspiration because of source criticism and redaction criticism although “conservative”), and Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Matthew (helpful exegetical and devotional thoughts if the paedobaptist Calvinism can be set aside).  I also spend a certain number of minutes reading the Septuagint or LXX (I am in Numbers and Psalms).  Some days I will focus more on one of these and some days more on another, and at the end of the month I see how many minutes I spent on them all in comparison to how many I am supposed to spend; whatever I have spent less time on, I plan to spend more time on the next month, and whatever I have spent more time on, I can focus upon less.

 

If I listen to the Bible read out loud, I take the amount of time I spend listening and divide it in half, as I find it easier to get distracted when listening to the Bible then when reading it.  We should be especially on guard against our flesh seeking to lead our minds to wander when we are engaged in a spiritual activity like reading God’s Word.  I can say with Paul:  “I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me” (Romans 7:21).

 

In any case, I am thankful for the hours I have been able to spend listening to the Bible read aloud.  Perhaps the My Daily Bible Reading YouTube channel will help you to read and/or listen through God’s Word (at least) once this year, meditate upon what you read, and obey it in reverent love.

The Purposeful Contortion and Confusion of End Time Truth

A primary way Satan keeps people deluded about life and the world is by his contortion and confusion of either origin or end time truth.  God reveals with pristine clarity the beginning and ending of everything.  Both of these revelations are vital for faith and practice.  Satan wants people deceived on how they got here and what will happen to them in the future.

Naturalism breeds more lust.  I like to say, it means we got here by accident.  No one’s your boss, so you’re your own boss.  That sounds great to most people, doing what they want to do.  Since they just happened, no design, they aren’t accountable to anyone or anything.  They live like they want, which, based on the nature of man, means following lust.

Origins

Even if someone contemplates a possibility of God, that isn’t strong enough to replace the dominion of lust in a life.  All the truths about God transmit from Him as origination of everything.  Other truths about God diminish when He didn’t create us.  The elimination of God creating man for HIs glory greatly decreases the power and importance of everything else scripture says.

The perversion of beginnings relates most to its compatibility with the theory of evolution.  Modernists of the nineteenth century began rethinking the meaning of Genesis to fit with Darwinism.  An allegorical interpretation of the first three chapters of the Bible allows to read evolution and an old earth into Genesis.

With people unsure about the beginning, it’s no wonder they doubt the ending.  Even theologians turn eschatology into a non-essential now.  They relegate prophecy to ambiguity.  Many churches have removed most of their eschatology from their doctrinal statements.  You don’t need a position to fit into a church.  It’s too uncertain to require for even professing Christians.

Endings

On a recent prophecy post I wrote here, an anonymous commenter (whom I did not publish) called crazy (he used “nutjobs”) churches that talk about or preach prophecy.  Opinions and speculation abounds on end time events.

The doctrines of Christ, salvation, man, and angels dovetail with prophecy.  When Jesus arrived in the first century, very few were ready or awaited His coming, because they had detached from prophetic reality.  The promises of God become of no effect as people falsify what He says will happen in the future.  This then deadens their anticipation and smothers their hope.

History functions in a chiliastic manner.  You could call it “going full circle.”  Paradise lost and paradise regained.  The destruction of the first necessitates the destruction of the last.  This renders meaningless everything in between.  Why believe anything if you can’t know how it starts and how it ends?

Many theologians and church leaders have capitulated to the attack on the origin and the ending.  This relegates most everything to what people call, living in the present or living in the moment.  I understand that concept in a positive way to a certain degree.  Living in the moment requires mindfulness and focus on the task at hand and perhaps gratefulness for what you’re experiencing in the present.  However, God wants futuristic living for the saints, an outlook of expectation.

A Forward Look

Scripture requires a forward look.  Paul in Philippians said, “reaching forth unto those things which are before” (3:13) and “we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (3:20).  Jesus said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33).  If we can’t know our beginning or ending, we lose the basis for living like scripture says.  An ultimate motivation for Paul was “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10).

‘Putting on the helmet of salvation’ (Ephesians 6:17) relates closely to last days events.  Salvation is complete in the future.  If people can’t be sure about most of the details, what can and do they mean?  How would we be sure that these uncertain things could be true?  This is where it stands in most ways today in eschatology.

Spiritualizing

The fastest growing view of the future is to spiritualize or allegorize the future.  People allegorize almost all of the prophetic passages and they take on numerous different possible meanings.  This has become not just possible but the preferred take in many places.

Now men spiritualize and allegorize the first few chapters of the Bible and the last book of the Bible.  People can make it mean what they want.  It’s no wonder people won’t take God’s Word seriously and churches are apathetic.  If people can’t really know the beginning and the ending, why care about everything in between?

David Whose Heart Was Perfect With The LORD His God?

David.  You look back to Saul, and then back at David.  Of course, David.  You look forward to Solomon, and then back to David.  Of course, David.  David.  Why?  Something is different about David.  What is it?

David and Solomon

When you arrive at 1 Kings 11:4, the Lord says:

For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

God was not saying that Solomon’s heart was not with the LORD his God.  It was not perfect with the LORD his God.  On the other hand, David’s heart was perfect with the LORD his God.  What was different about David, that his heart was perfect before the LORD his God, and Solomon’s wasn’t?

David and Jeroboam

Even Compared to Solomon

Then in 1 Kings 11:6, God says:

And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and went not fully after the LORD, as did David his father.

This puts the condition of Solomon compared to David in a different way:  he “went not fully after the LORD.”  He also did evil in the sight of the LORD.  By the time we get to Jeroboam, he’s worse than Solomon.  His heart wasn’t even with the LORD his God. 1 Kings 12:32 says:

And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

Then 1 Kings 13:33 says:

After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

Judgment on Jeroboam

Because of this, 1 Kings 13:34 says:

And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

And then God says to Jeroboam in 1 Kings 14:10:

Therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam, and will cut off from Jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, and will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man taketh away dung, till it be all gone.

In fulfillment of that in 1 Kings 15:29-30 we read:

And it came to pass, when he reigned, that he smote all the house of Jeroboam; he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed, until he had destroyed him, according unto the saying of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite: Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned, and which he made Israel sin, by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger.

Distinct Paths Taken

Again and again after this, you can read the phrase, “walked in the way of Jeroboam,” very much like there was the phrase, “as David thy father walked.”  These are two different paths in the history of Israel.  David’s path is very much described by what God warned Solomon in 1 Kings 9:4 (and 11:38):

And if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep my statutes and my judgments.

David did not live a life of sinless perfection, but he walked in integrity of heart, uprightness, doing all God commanded him, and keeping God’s statutes and judgments. Fulfilling that is not sinlessness, but it does mean having a perfect heart with the LORD and going fully after Him.

Scripture distinguishes the heart of David from other kings.  Some other kings had a heart fully after the LORD in the heritage of David.  The way this manifested itself more than any other was in the worship of David.  Someone fully after the LORD acknowledges who God is and then offers Him what He wants.

Solomon was an idolater, not to the extent of Jeroboam.  But then Jeroboam was an even worse idolater, because he gave himself fully to idolatry.  Solomon gave himself partly to the LORD and partly to idols.  Solomon set himself part by building the temple and worshiping God there, even though later he partially turned from that and ruined his legacy with God.

Worship Distinguished David

David murdered Uriah.  He committed multiple adultery.  He was a polygamist.  What does this mean in juxtaposition with the good things scripture says about him?

David was a true worshiper of God, who sought after God.  He failed, but his direction and his sincere spirit for the Lord characterized him over the flaws in his life.  The Bible and myself do not write these things to excuse David, but to elevate the distinction of worship.

Today churches are rampant with idolatry.  The church growth movement changed and corrupts the worship of the church.  It centers on the audience and not the Lord.  The false worship profanes God and shapes a false god, unlike the God of the Bible, in the imagination of the participants.  This is akin to the path begun by Solomon and then taken full fledged by Jeroboam.  It’s ruining young people, churches everywhere, and the entire United States of America.

Shaping a Jesus In Your Own Image and then Believing in Him for Salvation

Contrasting Christianity

Have you talked in public to an evangelical woman with a cross hanging down into her revealed cleavage?  You see the cross juxtapositioned with the other as a backdrop.  Not a fit, is it?  Maybe you, like me, wonder about the vast differences in professing Christianity.  They both claim to believe in Jesus Christ.  What’s going on?

One church you attend uses superficial, short preaching that centers on men’s felt needs.  They do series on self-interest topics that will attract people.  They keep it short with lots of humor.  The other opens the Bible and explains and applies exactly what it says, word for word.

Some churches use rock or pop music and call it praise.  Others use sacred music, saying that God rejects and hates rock or pop music and doesn’t want to hear it.  The former accepts worldly and even sinful dress or apparel.  The latter preaches against that in a practical way.

A church that calls itself Christian uses world amusements that target every demographic with alluring activities.  The other does exactly what the Bible presents as an obedient practice.

I could go on and on with varied descriptions of these two extremes, both calling themselves Christian.  Both of them say they believe in Jesus.  The modern or postmodern form of a professing Christian church wants toleration from the church with strict conformity to scripture.  When the biblical church, a true one, rejects the belief and practice of the false one, the false one calls this unloving, even unChristian.

Similar Doctrinal Statement, But….

Very often I’ve said that two indistinguishable churches have a very similar doctrinal statement.  The drastic incongruence between the two does not relate to their doctrinal statement.  The contradiction relates to a true or false or a beautiful or ugly imagination of God.  One fashions a god made after lust and the other after reverence.  God and all associated with Him stays sacred in a true church.  That church turns off a lot of people, not the aesthetic or feeling many professing Christians want.

Changing the God in the imagination changes everything about believing in Him, obeying Him, and worshiping Him.  It distorts everything.  Let me give you a simple illustration.

Scripture commands not to use corrupt communication.  It does not say what that is.  What was corrupt at one time and with the different imagination of God becomes uncorrupt.  It’s fine now.  Are you using corrupt communication?  No, because the meaning changed.  You have a different God that allows for that communication, so it’s fine.

The Beauty of Holiness

Psalm 96:9 says, “Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”  That’s a command that one might obey or disobey.  Let’s say someone does something he calls worship and it is not in the beauty of holiness.  That isn’t worship.  Here is a person claiming to worship, but not worshiping and in reality disobeying God.  People also do not know who God is because of the false portrayal of God presented.

The false god in the imagination that might have a pretty good doctrinal statement still completely misses.  This is how two professing Christianities portray such vast difference between the other.  The true presents something according to true churches through most of history.  The false presents a counterfeit, calling itself authentic or genuine.

Most of the false Christianity deemphasizes repentance.  Some of it will hold to repentance as an entrance unto salvation in Christ.  However, it’s just the word repentance used.  It isn’t repentance, because it doesn’t turn from these worldly things that dishonor God.  It hangs on to them.

False Repentance

What does the false repentance turn from?  It can be the superficial turning of not believing to believing.  However, at the same time holding to an impostor belief.  A person still has not turned from unbelief, because he distorts belief too.  Other forms of false repentance occur.  The Apostle Paul showed how that people replace true repentance with something short of it in 2 Corinthians 7.

I don’t think what I’m writing is beyond comprehension for people.  They know that two things that are different are not the same.  Only one of these turns from the belief and practice of historic Christianity.  That’s the false one.

Many, many people have shaped Jesus into their own image and then received the false one.  They read their chosen version of the Bible, which says, believe in Jesus.  They do.  Now they think they’re saved.  He must be Jesus.  If He isn’t, they haven’t believed in Him.  They are lost.

What’s different about those believing in the false Jesus?  Jesus is immanent.  He comes down and close in His manner as described in scripture.  He’s also transcendent.  1 Peter 1:16 says, “Be ye holy; for I am holy.”  Jesus is holy.  Their Jesus is not.  He isn’t sacred and He does not require holiness like Peter says.

The Law Enhances, Does Not Conflict, With Grace

Relationship Between the Law and Grace or Faith

In Galatians, the Apostle Paul argues for salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.  He opposes the alternative, adding even one work to grace.  Paul provides several arguments in Galatians 3 for the churches of Galatia to combat corruption of a true gospel.

To understand the right relationship of the law to grace and faith, Paul gives a great clue with a question in Galatians 3:21.

Is the law then against the promises of God?

This is a rhetorical question as seen in his answer in verse 21:  “God forbid.”  The law is not against the promises of God.  It does not conflict with the promises of God.  In saying the law does not conflict with the promises of God, he says that the law does not conflict with grace and faith.

Just as a reminder, “God forbid” is the strongest negative in the Greek language.  “God forbid” in a technical sense is idiomatic.  An idiom is “a phrase or expression that typically presents a figurative, non-literal meaning attached to the phrase.”  The translators decided a literal translation could not convey the original Greek, so they used the idiomatic expression, “God forbid.”  In the context of Galatians 3:21, Paul says no way the law conflicts with the promises of God.

The Law Must Not Conflict with Grace and Faith

For someone to take the correct position on the law, it must not conflict with grace and faith.  What position will create a conflict?  In the second half of verse 21, Paul says that it is the one that makes the law necessary for life or righteousness.  The law does not give life.  Neither does it make someone righteous.  Only grace or faith does that.

Number one, if the law gives life and righteousness, then grace does not.  Number two, if grace gives life and righteousness, then the law does not.  If the law and grace or faith do not conflict, then one must take choice number two.

Paul gives several other related arguments for grace alone and faith alone.  (1)  The salvation of Abraham came by grace alone through faith alone 430 years before the Mosaic law came.  (2)  When the Mosaic law came, it did not replace (“disannul,” verse 17) grace alone through faith alone, but enhanced it.  (3)  When the seed (Jesus) arrived 1500 years after the Mosaic law in fulfillment of the promises, He superseded the law.  Jesus wouldn’t supersede the law if it was necessary for life and righteousness.  It wasn’t.

How Does Jesus Supersede the Law?

Superseding is not abolishing or destroying.  I like the word as a description.  One might use fulfilled or transcended.  The law continues enhancing the promises even with the arrival of the seed.  How?

Galatians 3:22 says.  The law concludes all under sin, so that they will believe in Jesus Christ for life and righteousness.  Galatians 3:23 says that faith does not come to someone until the law locks him up.  The law still concludes a person under sin.  It still locks up a sinner, so that he looks to Jesus Christ as His only possible deliverance, and believes in Him.  Christ comes into the prison of sin and redeems the prisoner who believes in Him.

Unconditional and Unilateral Promises

As you’re reading, you might be asking, what are these “promises” of which I write?  They are the promises of the seed made by God that would bring blessing to Abraham’s descendants and all the nations of the earth (Genesis 12:1-3, cf. Genesis 3:15).  Also, God will impute righteousness to those who believe the promises (Genesis 15:6).

The promises of God of which Paul speaks are unconditional and unilateral.  Abraham was asleep (unconscious) when God made that contract, agreement, or covenant with Abraham.  Abraham did nothing, no works.  This is the point of Galatians that the promises were superior to the law in that they required no mediator.  Angels and Moses were mediators of the law.  The promises involved only one — God.

When denominations say, “No, you’re involved, people,” they conflict with grace and faith.  Now their adherents are required to continue “in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them” (Galatians 3:10, cf. Deuteronomy 27-28).  They add a mediator to the promises, when there are no mediators for the promises.  This brings conflict between the law and grace, to which Paul writes, “God forbid.”

A Right Understanding of the Law

What you hear from me is not a rejection of the law, but a right understanding of it.  The law continues.  Christ superseded it, but it still enhances the promises of God.  The rest of Galatians 3 and into chapter four lays that out.  Everyone still needs and should want the moral law of God and the spirit of the ceremonial and judicial laws.

Galatians 3:19 says the law “was added because of transgressions.”  John Gill wrote that the law

was over and above added unto [the promises], for the sake of restraining transgressions; which had there been no law, men would not have been accountable for them; and they would have gone into them without fear, and with impunity; but the law was given, to lay a restraint on men, by forbidding such and such things, on pain of death; and also for the detecting, discovering, and making known transgressions, what they are, their nature and consequences; these the law charges men with, sets them before them, in their true light and proper colours; and convicts them of them, stops their mouths, and pronounces them guilty before God.

Saved men, those who received the promises of God, are not under the law.  That means they are not under the condemnation of the law.  It does not mean they are free to disobey the law.  Grace frees us from the condemnation of the law, not the law.  Unsaved men still abide under the condemnation of the law.  Since the law does not give life and righteousness, they must receive the promises.  In other words, they must by grace alone believe alone in Christ alone.

Scripture Is Science

Science

The English word “science” occurs only once in the New Testament, referring to “science falsely so-called” (1 Tim 6:20).  What is often called “science” really is “science falsely so-called.”  What is science?  Merriam-Webster online gives the following definitions:

1  a :  knowledge or a system of knowledge covering general truths or the operation of general laws especially as obtained and tested through scientific method
b :  such knowledge or such a system of knowledge concerned with the physical world and its phenomena
2  a :  a department of systematized knowledge as an object of study
b :  something (such as a sport or technique) that may be studied or learned like systematized knowledge
3 :  a system or method reconciling practical ends with scientific laws
4 :  the state of knowing : knowledge as distinguished from ignorance or misunderstanding

“Science” translates gnosis in the King James Version, a Greek word that appears 29 times in the Greek Textus Receptus.  Every other time, the KJV translators translated it “knowledge.”  The English word “science” comes from the Latin scire, “to know,” and so science lays claim to knowledge.  That doesn’t clash with definitions that I see for science in Merriam Webster, unless someone wanted to get more technical.  I’m especially talking about the definition that includes obtaining and testing something with the scientific method.

Scripture Is Scientific?

In an earlier piece, I wrote, “Scripture is scientific.”  After a friend challenged me, I changed that to, “Scripture is science.”  I’m not sure I would want to call scripture, scientific, because that means something different.  That is based on the principles and methods of science, which I don’t think is true of scripture.

One usage of gnosis is Colossians 2:3, which speaks of Jesus Christ, saying:  “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”  Paul reveals that all the treasures of knowledge are in Jesus.  Obviously Jesus knows everything, all mysteries and all knowledge (1 Corinthians 13:2).  When we listen to Jesus, and He says nothing in scripture about something, it is less important than other knowledge.  He still knows it all and gives whatever someone needs.

Is observation or the testing of the scientific method the only way of knowing what we know?  Someone might challenge the Genesis account of creation as science, because it isn’t observable or testable.  In that way, scripture isn’t scientific. However, if science is knowledge, can we say we know the origin of everything?  I’m not saying, believe it, but know it.  We do know it from reading Genesis 1.  Scripture is science.

The Hearing of Faith

Scripture says a lot of “I know,” “we know,” and “ye know.”  What scripture calls the “hearing of faith” (Galatians 3:2, 5) is knowledge.  Faith comes by hearing the Word of God.  Scripture is the superior means of knowledge and the basis of faith.  What God says in His Word is always true.  What God says, we know, because it is true.  He wants us to believe what we know from scripture, and belief comes after knowing.

Abraham questioned God’s covenant because he and Sarah were childless and old.  God reaffirmed His promise in Genesis 15:4-5, and Abraham “believed in the LORD” (Genesis 15:6).  God “counted it to him for righteousness.”  God promised, “I will make of thee a great nation” (Genesis 12:2) and “in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 12:3).

Abraham questioned God in Genesis 15:1-2 because his empirical “knowledge” said “no children.”  If he went to a doctor, a scientist of sorts, that doctor would say, “No on child birth for you and Sarah.”  How would he know?  After God spoke to Abraham, Abraham believed what He said.  God counted it for righteousness.  What God said was science.

Was Abraham righteous?  Did he know that?  Yes, because God said he was.  When Abraham was to offer Isaac in Genesis 22, he would offer him.  Why?  Hebrews 11:19 explains.  He knew God was able to raise Isaac up.  He knew that.  Is that science?  Would an empiricist have raised the knife to sacrifice his son?  God Himself also offered his own Son and raised Him up.

True Science

If one considers empiricism, Eve saw that the tree was good for food (Genesis 3:6).  Scoffers in 2 Peter 3 thought highly of their knowledge, mocking the truth of the second coming.  God prohibited the tree to Eve.  And He promised the second coming.  Those are knowledge.  2 Peter begins with this teaching on science (knowledge) [1:3]:

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue

In Genesis 22:18 God said, “And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.”  The Apostle Paul comments on this promise from God in Galatians 3:16:

Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Paul reports that “seed” is singular.  It’s speaking of Christ, which parallels with Genesis 3:15:

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Incorporate Galatians 3:8 with the above:

And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

God would justify the heathen through faith.  The heathen would believe in the seed, that through the seed they shall be blessed.  Their faith also counts for righteousness.

The way to blessing for the world is through Jesus Christ.  That’s not what science says.  Science says population decline, one world government, the center for disease control, and reducing emissions in farming.  The hearing of faith proceeds from knowledge.  Knowledge informs of the truth of eternal blessing.

10,000 Out of 10,000

God backs up scripture with mathematical probability.  Everything He said would happen, happened.  All that He says will happen, will happen.  100 out of 100.  1,000 out of 1,000.  10,000 out of 10,000.  Nothing else brings that kind of record.  We know what He says.  It’s why the Apostle Paul could and should say (2 Timothy 1:12):

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

This isn’t a leap in the dark.  We know.  God holds us accountable, based upon knowledge.

Transcendent

Transcendental truth, goodness, and beauty are outside of what men call the “scientific method,” process, and peer consensus.  Someone can know the transcendentals, but they come by means of the revelation of God.  They are self-evident, because God revealed them.  They dovetail with the miracles of the Bible.  God upholds all things.  He intervenes in what He made and according to His will or His purposes.

As one example, God commands us, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth” (Ephesians 4:29), without informing us what corrupt communication is.  The Lord assumes we know what it is.  Some still deny it, but this is truth suppression.  God reveals this knowledge and requires another hearing of faith.

Pleasing God requires knowledge.  The knowledge informs the faith that pleases God.  This is not a secret knowledge, but it won’t be found by those who refuse to seek it with their whole heart (Jeremiah 29:13-14).

You Can Lead an Evangelistic Bible Study!

You can lead an evangelistic Bible study! I have mentioned on What is Truth? before the series of evangelistic Bible studies that the FaithSaves.net website has made available.  The seven studies themselves can be viewed here, where one can also see an example by video of how one can present them to the lost.  The files can also be downloaded and customized with updated church addresses here.  They are in use in various churches in the United States and in foreign countries.

If you have never led an evangelistic Bible study before, I have had the privilege of teaching an extensive series on how to lead one which you can watch.  We have gone through study #1, on the nature of Scripture, study #2, on the one true Triune God, study #3, on God’s law and man’s sin, and study #4, on the Person of the Mediator, Jesus Christ, and His death, burial, and resurrection.  Study #5, covering repentance and faith, has been started.  So now you can not only see a video example of how to lead an evangelistic Bible study, have extensive written notes that can help you to do it, but also have extensive video teaching on how to do it.

Thus, if you are not trying to preach the gospel to the lost and to follow the pattern in Acts of regularly giving more and more truth to interested people until they either repent and believe or are hardened and do not want the truth anymore, what is your excuse?  Is it one that will stand up at the judgment seat of the holy Christ who died for the sins of the world?  Can Christ die for every person, but you do nothing or nearly nothing to preach the gospel to them, both through clearly explaining the entire gospel in single interactions and through evangelistic explanation in repeated, regular sessions–an evangelistic Bible study?

Of course, there are many ways to explain to the lost the glorious riches of God’s grace.  If your church has a different evangelistic Bible study that they like better, that still presents the full-orbed truth, that is just fine.  But you need to be doing something.  Christ did not save you so that you could be in the pew-warming ministry, but so that you can be in the ministry of making disciples from every kindred, tongue, and nation (Matthew 28:18-20).

Faith and Resilience for Evangelism

The dictionary of Oxford Languages says that resilience is “the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.”  The American Psychological Association writes: “Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands.”  Everyday Health says: “Resilience is the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events.”  Psychology Today says:  “Resilience is the psychological quality that allows some people to be knocked down by the adversities of life and come back at least as strong as before.”

Evangelism Is Hard

You get it.  True evangelism, where someone preaches a true gospel and doesn’t depend on gimmicks or cut corners, is difficult or hard.  So much so, most professing Christians do not evangelize.

Right before the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, verse 18 says:  “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”  At least because of the difficulty of evangelizing the lost, Jesus prefaced His command to do it by reminding His followers of how much authority He possessed.  “I have all authority to tell you to do anything, especially this difficult thing.”

Evangelism is unlike anything else that you do or will do.   It’s not like sales.  It shouldn’t be.  We’re not selling a product out there.  If you are going to sell something, you want it to be something that people want.   In general, you can’t earn a living trying to sell things people do not want.

People Don’t Want It

The message of salvation, the gospel, is greater than anything.  You can’t find a better “product.”  Nonetheless, people don’t want it.  You can only offer it.  And even that’s not easy, because people very often won’t even give the opportunity.

You want to give the gospel and people say, no.  Then you give the gospel, and they say, no.  Sometimes, you give the gospel, they say, yes, and then fall away very quickly.  Extremely disappointing.

If you are a painter, you get done with your day, and you look at results.  You finished room or rooms, maybe a whole house.  You get satisfaction or fulfillment out of those results.  Same with mowing lawns or a large range of various jobs, almost anything else.  Sometimes doing evangelism can feel like digging ditches and filling them.  It doesn’t seem like anything is happening.

People Don’t Like It

As a whole, people are not happy even to see you show up, if you are there to evangelize.  They put signs on their doors to discourage you.  It doesn’t make you more popular.

I went to every door in our neighborhood.  I’ve noticed since then that very often people won’t even look at us.  They don’t want eye contact.  I understand.  With my peripheral vision, I look for them to glance my way, so at that very moment, I can wave in a friendly manner.  They know I’m doing it so they keep their heads turned away the entire time.

Everything I’ve written so far after the first paragraph undergirds the need for resilience.  I have a goal to evangelize every single day if possible.  I know how to do it.  Good conversations are a norm.  I preach the gospel many times.  Even with that, a vast number of times I have little to nothing to show for it.

What Provides the Resilience

Yes, the question comes, why do it?  Or, why keep doing it?  Getting through the hardship of the difficulty in evangelism is the resilience.  I want to keep doing it, to keep going back to the well.

The key for me is faith.  I believe in what I’m doing.  When I say nothing is better than the gospel, that means I believe in the gospel.  If I went months with no one receiving Christ, I still believe in how great it is.  Heaven rejoices over it.  I believe that.  My labor is not in vain.  I believe that.

I still struggle, but my faith keeps me going.  My faith looks up to God.  It looks to His Word.

My mind goes to a couple of traditional hymns we sing.  In faith I have a resting place.  Faith is the victory that overcomes the world.

Jeff Riddle: Reformed Baptist and Confessional Bibliology Advocate’s Debate Review

 

Dr. Jeff Riddle has produced some helpful post-debate reviews. You can watch part 1, part 2, part 3, and part 4 on YouTube, or watch them on the embedded links below.  I appreciate what Dr. Riddle has written on what he calls Confessional Bibliology.  Dr. Riddle rightly wants to distance himself (as do most people who are happy to call themselves King James Only) from extremists like Peter Ruckman and Gail Riplinger while recognizing the difference between the way the original language text is inspired as to its words and translations are God’s Word as to their substance (what he calls the principle of Authoritas Divina Duplex, if you want a little Latin).  Whatever you wish to call it, I appreciate his perspective on this issue of Bibliology, although Scripture does not teach TULIP Calvinism (and it also certainly does not teach Arminianism).

There is a written debate review here on What is Truth? by Dr. Kent Brandenburg: “The White-Ross Debate: Who Won?” as well as some follow-up posts by Dr. Brandenburg (follow-up part 1; part 2; part 3).

There are also some debate reviews by a gentleman named Nick Sayers, who has a website called Textus Receptus.  I know less about his doctrinal position than I do about Dr. Riddle.  Mr. Sayers belongs to a religious organization called “Revolution Church.” He made seven extremely long debate review videos (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, part 7).  A large percentage of what he points out is useful, although I would disagree with him at a minority of points.  Everyone should repent and believe the gospel, and then be immersed into a Baptist Church, not a Revolution church.

 

I am not aware of any of the disciples of James White making any review videos dealing in detail with the substance of the debate.  The best I could locate was a five-minute review by one of James White’s disciples named “Polite Leader.” Polite Leader completely ignored the fact that the Nestle-Aland text is a patchwork and many of the other extreme problems with the text White is defending, but I suppose one can only say so much in a video that short, and so putting in what he believed were James’ best points would be important, from his viewpoint.

 

Thanks again for your prayers for God’s truth and for me during the debate.  To Him alone be the glory for the good for His kingdom that was accomplished by it, and to me alone be the blame for what I should have done better.
