God and the Bible Are Dispensational (Part One)
God Wants Understanding of His Word
God delivered His Word for men to understand and by which they would live. Men must study it and then rightly divide it (2 Tim 2:15), but God made its meaning accessible (Rom 10:8-10, Deut 30:11-14). He will judge men according to it (John 12:48).
The Bible is not indecipherable. Its degree of opaqueness relates almost entirely to desire and belief. Proverbs 2:3-5 say these such things:
3 Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and] liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
Still People May Not Understand God’s Word
Rebellious
On the other hand, Psalm 106:7 says,
Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.
God wanted understanding, but those who did not have “ears to hear” could not understand. Ezekiel 12:2 explains that some “have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house.” Not understanding does not always relate to supernatural blinding. A student in class may not like the subject, so he does not comprehend or retain. Almost everything is lost on him. Furthermore, Jesus revealed in Matthew 13:13-15:
13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
Satanic
A sufficient degree of the understanding of scripture becomes unattainable to the one not caring about it or wanting it. An unbeliever might hear and comprehend, but still miss what God says. This testifies to the uniqueness of scripture. Isaiah 8:17 says: “And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.” To some, God hides His face, and others will look for God, apparently finding Him because of that looking.
The Apostle Paul says Satan works toward deluminating blindness. “[T]he god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (2 Cor 4:4). What someone might ordinarily understand, he cannot because Satan keeps him from getting it through various Satanic means.
God Wrote His Word with Plain Meaning
Since God wrote a book to man to understand, a man would expect a reading of it in accordance with a plain meaning. God intended accessibility of its message. Men would live by what He said even from a child.
I didn’t make this up. But how I explain plain meaning is understanding scripture like the people heard it in that day. What did the words mean and how were they used at the very time men wrote and received them?
What was God saying in Genesis to the original audience of Genesis? Or, what was the Lord saying in Matthew to the original audience of Matthew? When someone gets that interpretation, what God was really saying, what is that called? Someone might call that a literal interpretation or a grammatical-historical interpretation.
An original audience, the children of Israel, received the original manuscripts of the first five books of the Bible, called the Torah or Pentateuch. As they read through those writings, they received more understanding of each part as they also knew more of the whole. When God gave other inspired writings through various other human authors, such as Joshua, Judges, historical books, and poetic ones, the meaning of the previously given books, the Torah, did not change in meaning. Genesis still means the same as it did when the first readers first set eyes on it.
God Changed His Methods and Manner of Operation Sometimes
Different Eras or Ages
As God gave more writings, one could understand more of His will. Through history, sometimes God changed His methods or His manner of operations. God didn’t change. As He continued communicating with mankind, He used different, sometimes new genres. He spoke in different ways. God used symbolic or figurative language among other types of writing.
Looking back at proceeding time periods, historians recognize eras, ages, or periods of time. They may disagree with the dividing points for these periods, but they admit shifts in thinking and lifestyle. You’ve heard of premodern, modern, and postmodern as a description. Surely you’ve heard said, ancient, middle, and modern. Broader periods can break down into even more detail.
The Bible is Dispensational
The changes of methods and manners of God as seen in scripture also divide into epochs of time. In order to systematize a literal understanding of scripture, grammatical and historical, men organized scripture into dispensations. The system of interpretation became known as dispensationalism. Dispensation- alism recognized the continuity and discontinuity of God’s methods and manner of operation across these various ages.
God is dispensational in His revelation of Him and His will. The Bible is a dispensational book. Any literal or true view of history is dispensational.
Old Testament Priority
Succeeding new generations of recipients of original scripture could understand what they read in their day. Scripture did not change in meaning. However, God makes prophesies. He uses prophets to tell the future. The understanding of a divine prophecy could increase with time, closer to or after its fulfillment (cf. Daniel 12:4). The Babylonian captivity shed light on the prophesies of captivity. The return to the land after captivity shed light on the prophesies of return to the land.
The added understanding with a fulfillment of prophecy is not a change in meaning. God wanted understanding of what He said. He gave His Word to man to be lived. God meant the original audience of the Old Testament to understand its meaning. “Hearing” meant understanding (Deut 19:20, 21:21, 31:12-13). God did inspire the Old Testament with a New Testament priority. The Bible does not read as though God a thousand or more years later said what He really was saying in what He earlier inspired.

Men Seek Signs and Wisdom, But God Saves by the Foolishness of Preaching the Gospel
1 Corinthians 1:18-32: The Foolishness of Preaching
In 1 Corinthians 1, Paul said God uses the foolishness of preaching to save. God saves people through the foolishness of preaching. Paul started out this section in verse 18 by saying that “the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness.”
It’s not that the cross is foolishness or that preaching is foolishness. People think it is foolishness and Paul is saying, “That thing they think is foolishness; that’s what God uses to save.” God uses a means that does not make sense. Because people think the gospel is foolishness, they become offended from it.
Of all the offenses of the gospel, Paul gives at least two. (1) The Cross, and (2) Preaching. The cross is offensive. It is this way also in at least two ways. (1) Someone on a cross needs saving. Saving comes by a powerful means. (2) The cross would be to say that Jesus is the Savior or the Messiah. I’m not going to write about that in this post. Instead, preaching.
Rather Signs or Wisdom
Paul in essence asks, “Why use preaching when Jews seek after signs and Greeks after wisdom?” (1 Cor 1:22) He divides all men into these two different methodological categories. Jews and Greeks need signs and wisdom, not preaching. In my thirty-five plus years of ministry, I agree that every audience of ministry breaks down into those two general categories.
When you think of signs and wisdom, that might seem like two items people should like and want. They are two biblical words. In a very technical sense, a sign is a miracle. Almost exclusively, I think someone should view a miracle as a sign gift. I will get back to that.
Wisdom. Isn’t Proverbs about wisdom? We pray for wisdom. How could wisdom be bad? Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principle thing.”
Signs and Wisdom
Signs
Signs are something evident in a way of supernatural intervention. If there is a God, won’t He do obvious supernatural things? “If He doesn’t do those, why should I believe in Him? I want to see some signs. Wouldn’t He give me those if He really wanted me to believe in Him? That would be easy for Him, if He really did exist. If God did give me signs, I would believe. Since He doesn’t, then I won’t believe or I don’t need to believe.”
The absence of signs is not that God is not working. He works in thousands of different ways in every moment. They are all supernatural. We even can see how God is working in numbers of ways.
People would say they want more than God’s providential working. That isn’t enough. They want God to make it easy for them to believe by doing something amazing and astounding like what they read that Moses, Elijah, Elisha, Jesus, and the Apostles did. People desire direct supernatural divine intervention.
Churches feel the pressure to fake signs, because people want them. They aren’t signs, because they’re faking them, which redefines even what a sign is. Churches also conjure up experiences that give an impression that something supernatural is occurring. People can claim a sign from a lowered expectation of what a sign is. Even if it isn’t something supernatural, people want to feel something at church that might have them think the Holy Spirit is there. This is their evidence for God.
Wisdom
Wisdom in 1 Corinthians 1 isn’t God’s wisdom, but human or man’s wisdom. This could be what people call “science” today. It is scientific proof or evidence. They need data or empirical evidence. This is very brainy arguments.
God is working in the world. It is good to talk about that. This is known as the providence of God. He upholds this world and all that is in it in many various ways. I love that.
A lot of evidence exists out there for everything that is in the Bible: archaeological, scientific, psychological, logical, and historical. People will say that’s what they need and that’s what makes sense to them. Even if they’re not saying that, it makes sense to believers that they need intellectual arguments.
Jews and Greeks in 1 Corinthians 1 represent all apparent seekers in God. If churches and their leaders are seeker sensitive, they would provide signs and wisdom. In a categorical way, that’s what they do. They use the preferred ways of their audience, rather than what God says to do. Apparent seekers are not the source for a method of salvation. God is.
You could give analysis as to the place of signs and wisdom as categorical approaches for ministry philosophy. Churches are rampant with both. Paul is saying, eliminate those as methods. Use the God-ordained method only.
God wants preaching as the method of accomplishing salvation. People are not saved any other way than preaching. Many reasons exist for this, some given in 1 Corinthians 1 and others in other biblical texts.
Millennials Will Rue the Day They Despised Authority
Authority proceeds from God. When I write “authority,” I mean what the Bible says it is, and it is hierarchical (Romans 13:1-3). It doesn’t violate scripture. God created or originated authority. It is necessary to accomplish His moral will (God’s sovereign will is always going to occur). Authority orders the divine design of the world. It will only work the way God designed, if authority is respected.
I’m not saying that all millennials despise authority. I’m writing about millennials who do, and really anyone who does, but I focus on millennials because this is more characteristic of their generation. Millennials will still want authority now and especially in the future. They will need it. Right now in the short term it is convenient for them to despise authority.
Why should anyone do what these millennials tell them to do? If they do tell anyone to do, why should they expect them to do what they are told? Why should these millennials ever possess any authority, if they don’t believe in it themselves?
Many Christian leaders today decry the apostasy of the day. For all the possible causes, a perverted view of authority explains a lot. In a rudimentary way, it is the underlying problem. How? Why?
God is in charge. He uses under-authorities to be in charge. He authorizes institutions — family, church, government, etc. — to order the world He owns. Satan merely usurps that authority. The response to authority is obedience. The attack of authority undermines God’s institutions and then results in disobedience. Salvation itself comes through the obedience of faith. The faith is in God, Who is the authority. His under-authorities are still His authority. Someone who disobeys those, with the exception of violations of the Word of God, disobeys Him. They are not believing in Him, because this is how He works, just like He used men for the writing of His Word. In that sense, obedience to God is obedience to Moses, for instance.
All of society breaks down with the position of these millennials on authority, really just so they can have their own way, just like Korah and his band with Moses in Numbers 16. They will justify it or excuse it by saying that their authority is unreasonable or wrong or bad leaders. They know best about leadership, how it’s supposed to be done. In most cases though, they can’t even be challenged, these millennials. They offer no due process, no discussion, no defense. They are judge, jury, and executioner. Like Rehoboam of 1 Kings 12, they look to their contemporaries, their friends, other millennials, as proof or evidence that they are right, their cronies on social media.
No one who despises authority as a practice is a Christian. God is the Author of authority. Again, I’m not talking about so-called authority that teaches or requires something contrary to the Word of God. Just because millenials don’t like what they’re being told doesn’t mean that they can call it unscriptural, and that’s their simple, rebellious way out.
The despising of authority starts with not truly glorifying God as God. The despising of authority is an outgrowth of not glorifying God. You know someone does not glorify God because he despises authority. It is indicative of a reprobate mind.
The benchmark or the norm for someone aligned with God is subjection to authority. His instinct is to do what he is told. He listens. With God-ordained authority, he is swift to hear, slow to speak (argue), and slow to wrath (at what he’s being told) [James 1:19]. He is apt to do what he is told, rather than bucking it.
If you are millennial, and you despise authority, don’t expect your spouse to submit, nor your children. Why should they? You shouldn’t expect your employees to listen to you. You don’t listen, why should they listen to you? The culture that you spawn will be one that will break down because authority is necessary. Your disrespect will come back on you. There is no way that your world will work.
The millennial who despises authority won’t be in the kingdom of Jesus Christ, because Jesus expects obedience. He is the King. Your Jesus might be something more like a therapist, but the Jesus of the Bible, the only true one, will rule over the earth. You won’t like His kingdom and you won’t be in it. It is a kingdom of authority.
2 Peter relates despising authority to lust. Lust then relates to self, to me, me first. 2 Peter 2:10 says:
But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
They walk after the flesh. Their lives are characterized by flesh. Their music is fleshly. Their entertainment is fleshly. Their recreation is fleshly. Someone who lives according to the flesh doesn’t want the restraint of a authority, hence, he despises it. He is not afraid to speak evil of authority. When the authority arrives to restrain, like the Holy Spirit, the Restrainer (2 Thess 2:7), he tears down the authority.
Righteous men are very careful with their authority, especially in public. Righteous men don’t rebuke an elder, but intreat (1 Timothy 5:1). This is seen in the servant/master or employee/employer: “be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling.” “Fear and trembling” is a non-starter with most millennials today. It’s a violation of personal wellness and self-care.
Deuteronomy 5:1 says:
And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
There are verses like that all through Deuteronomy. Moses says, these statutes and judgments that I speak, learn, keep, and do them. That is how authority works. Moses says something and everyone learns it, keeps it, and does it. This is especially the message of the Bible toward parental authority, that is seen again and again in Proverbs. This generation is even represented by Proverbs 30:11, “There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.” The book of Proverbs reads very serious about this from God. I’m going to publish all of these just so that you have them all in one place:
Proverbs 1:8, My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
Proverbs 4:1, Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
Proverbs 10:1, A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.
Proverbs 15:20, A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish man despiseth his mother.
Proverbs 17:21, He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
Proverbs 17:25, A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
Proverbs 19:13, A foolish son is the calamity of his father.
Proverbs 19:26, He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.
Proverbs 20:20, Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Proverbs 23:22, Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Proverbs 23:24-25, The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
Proverbs 28:7, Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.
Proverbs 30:17, The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
Many, if not most, of these statements are axiomatic. A millennial may question them, but it’s like questioning the transitive property or some other axiom. They are just true. As you read them, millennial, you can question them or challenge them or just ignore them, but if they are you, then they are who you are.
You will notice that there is very little about the father and what he’s doing with his son, but it’s about the son and what he’s doing with his father. If the father is disobedient to scripture, and teaches that, that’s bad, but this isn’t the issue. There aren’t a series of verses that say, “Father, please thy son and make sure he gets to have his way and live like he wants. Don’t be too scary. You don’t want to hurt his feelings.” Your millennial companions might listen to your complaints and justifications, but in the judgment of God, you are still guilty. You won’t escape this judgment of God without repentance. It’s on you, no one else.
